Lesvos Hikes

About us

Lesvos HikesWe are Sabine and Dirk Wolff, born and raised in Germany. We have traveled a lot in our free time - our hiking boots always in the suitcase - to many beautiful places in the world. We were often traveling off the beaten tourist track and got to know the beauty and tranquility of many secret places, which we really appreciated. Again and again, our journeys took us back to Greece, where we spent increasingly more time. On the Aegean island of Lesvos, we finally found the place where we want to live. Since April 2016 we are fully licensed as a travel agency with our main focus on hikes on the island. We offer all kind of walks and hikes for individuals and small groups all over the year – as any time of the years is great for hiking and experiencing nature. We are based in the small village Vrisa in the south of Lesvos.

Our concept - to experience authentic Lesvos

goatsThe island of Lesvos has many facets: rocky desert landscapes in the west, mountain regions with peaks up to 1000 meters, a coastline with beautiful bays and long sandy beaches with crystal clear water, hot curative springs, large forest regions, 11 million olive trees, natural flora and fauna, waterfalls with lots of water even during the summer, charming small towns and mountain villages, art and culture, ancient temples and monuments, museums, ouzo distilleries, and more. This list is long and shows clearly that Lesvos is never boring.

Hiking on Lesvos is always an adventure. There is so much to see and so much to enjoy that we strongly recommend experiencing the authentic Lesvos while hiking through its countryside. We have put together some beautiful and interesting walks - short and long – in different regions of the island. Hiking on Lesvos is possible at any time of the year – all seasons have their beauty !

Our hikes lead you through unspoiled countryside, through shady pine forests, to beautiful beaches and to places with fantastic views. We will show you local and sometimes unique flora and fauna, beautiful villages, churches and monasteries, tavernas with tasty local food, and all the little secret places that we know from the local people. During our hikes we try to show you as many facets of the authentic island of Lesvos as possible. We hope that you will enjoy it as we do.

We will create an individual hiking program, tailored to suit you, to make your holiday here an unforgettable experience. We will help you see the island through our eyes, participating and benefiting from our knowledge. Our aim is to share this love with you, our customers.

Our Lesvos Hikes

Day trip #1 “The South around Melinda”
(Level of difficulty: Medium)
Circular walk Melinda – Panagia Krifti - Melinda
Total Distance of the hike:  10 km
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

Panagia Krifti, LesvosThe trip: We start our hike at Melinda on the south coast. Melinda is a tiny hamlet with perhaps two dozen inhabitants, six kilometres west of Plomari. First we follow the narrow asphalt road uphill towards Paleochori. When the road turns inland, we stay on the coastal sand track. From here we have spectacular views of the steep coast and the deep blue sea. Far below - unfortunately unreachable by us - are beautiful little beaches. On a clear day you can see the island of Chios approximately 50 km away, and the Turkish coastline more to the east. On a steep path we now climb down to the amazing cave chapel of Panagia Krifti - the sanctuary is a cave! Close to the chapel there are hot thermal springs that flow in a natural pool at sea level. You can enter the crystal clear water over a small jetty. Here we stop for a revitalizing break.  If you like, you may  bathe in the natural hot pool and then cool off in the sea, which is a memorable experience.

Pleasantly refreshed, we climb the path uphill through shady olive groves to the small village of Paleochori. Some corners of the "main street" are so narrow that you hardly fit through with a standard car, but friendly Greek people are always at hand to help – and watch. We have a coffee or refreshment in one of the small kafeneion and relax from the steep climb.

Now comes the easier part of the hike. We head down towards the sea, passing a modern olive press and little further a very old oil press which is still in operation. If the doors are open we may have the chance to look inside and watch the process. Through olive groves we walk back to Melinda.

In Melinda, we now enjoy a late lunch in our favourite taverna overlooking the sea. After we have eaten some tasty Greek food we can enjoy some relaxation on the sunbeds at this beautiful beach and a refreshing swim in the sea. The beach consists of multi-coloured pebbles, you may want to collect a few as a reminder of that lovely day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation by arrangement.

Day trip #2 “ Around Skala Loutron ”
(Level of difficulty: Easy)
Circular walk Skala Loutron – Agios Ermogenis – Skala Loutron
Total Distance of the hike: 10 km,
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

Ag Ermogenis, Lesvos The trip: We begin this hike in Skala Loutron at the Gulf of Gera. This area is hardly touched by tourism; you will see secluded bays, beautiful little churches and traditional small tavernas. The track leads us along the quiet waters of the Gulf through olive groves and pine forests to one of the most stunning beaches on Lesvos: Agios Ermogenis. This little bay has two beaches, a slightly larger pebble beach and a small sandy beach. After the first part of the hike we take some time for an extended sunbathe or a swim in the clear water. Later we enjoy a delicious lunch in the summer taverna on the beach.  Feeling stronger after the delicious meal we hike over small paths back to Skala Loutron. Here we sit down for a coffee or ouzo in one of the taverns at the harbour and watch the world go by.

Day trip #3 “Hike around Agiassos”
(Level of difficulty: Easy)
Circular walk Karini – Agiassos - Karini
Total Distance of the hike:  9 km
Duration including stops:  6-7 hours

Karini Spring, Lesvos The trip: We start our exhilarating hike in the tiny hamlet of Karini, which looks like an oasis with over 600 year old plane trees. From here we walk along passing an old olive press and through an idyllic river valley with big, shady trees and natural pools. We continue on old tracks through olive groves towards the traditional village Asomatos. If we are lucky, the small village shop is open for chilled drinks and we can rest a while at the fountain in the shade.

From Asomatos we hike through a diverse landscape of olive groves and woods to Agiassos - with Mount Olympos always visible in the background. In Agiassos – perhaps the most fascinating mountain village of the island - we have time for a nice stroll through the village shops.  We especially like the handmade ceramics (be careful: there are also cheap ceramics from China, which can be easily identified if you look at the price). We also find locally collected herbs and tea, excellent olive oil, cheese and honey and many other culinary delights. We stop in one of the traditional kafeneia for a tasty meze (delicious snacks, traditionally served with ouzo or wine).

After the meal we would like to show you the famous church of the Virgin Mary (visited by many Orthodox pilgrims for its miracle working icon). Then we head back down to Karini on old pilgrims’ tracks. In Karini we finish our trip with a cool drink or a coffee.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation by arrangement.

Day trip #4 “ Agiassos and Mount Olympus”
(Level of difficulty: Medium)
Circular walk Agiassos – Mount Olympus - Agiassos
Total Distance of the hike: 10 km,
Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

Agiassos, LesvosThe trip: We start our tour of the summit in the village of Agiassos, one of the most  fascinating mountain villages of the island of Lesvos. This lovely village is located about 400m above sea level. On ancient Kalderimi (old pilgrim and donkey paths) and narrow tracks we head up to Mount Olympus, at 968m the highest mountain of the island. During the ascent we have stunning views to the impressive White Mountains and the surrounding countryside. Mount Olympus is also known locally as Profitis Ilias because, like many high peaks in Greece, it has a small chapel dedicated to Profitis Ilias (the Prophet Elijah). At the top of the mountain, on a limestone plateau the summit is dominated by a large, white cross and the eponymous small chapel. From up here we have a breathtaking view of large parts of the island and - on clear days - beyond. We stop here to rest and enjoy the view.  Slowly we start our descent. We arrive further down at a beautiful view point where we have arranged a welcoming table, covered with small Greek delicacies. Here we rest a while and enjoy the tasty picnic and cool drinks.  Feeling stronger after the delicious meal, we start the descent to Agiassos. Once in Agiassos we take time for a stroll through the shady alleys and shops. If you wish, you can visit the famous pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary (visited by many Orthodox pilgrims for its miracle working icon). In one of the local kafenia we relax after the exhilarating mountain hike and enjoy a coffee or ouzo.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Day trip #5 “ The Three Monasteries”
(Level of difficulty: Easy)
Circular walk Kalloni – Three Monasteries – Skala Kallonis - Kalloni
Total Distance of the hike: 14 km,
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

Liminos Monastery, LesvosThe trip: The meeting point for our tour is Kalloni, from here we drive to the great bridge behind Kalloni. We start the hike walking on an ancient cobbled track through the hilly countryside to the women’s monastery Myrsiniotissas. This beautiful monastery with its secluded courtyard ran a secret school during the Turkish occupation. Unfortunately, the monastery is not always open – if we are lucky, we can go inside and see it. Our hike continues on the old pilgrims’ route to the Moni Limonos. This monastery of friars was already built before the Turkish occupation. It was often destroyed and rebuilt; the current building dating back to 1527. Moni Limonos is probably the most interesting monastery in Lesvos – we take some time to look around this splendid building. In the pleasant café we sit down for a coffee or refreshment. Once refreshed we resume our hike, with stunning views of the bay of Kalloni through picturesque lava stone formations to the approximately 500 year old monastery Metochi.

After we have seen this monastery we head towards Skala Kallonis, always with scenic views of the bay and to the mountains on the other side of the Gulf. In Skala Kallonis we enjoy a light lunch on the beach. Depending on the season we can try the famous sardines from the gulf.  After lunch we spend some time at the beach, relax on a sunbed or go for a swim in the shallow water.

Minimum of 2 people required, meeting point is Kalloni or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Day trip #6 “Trail of the past – Agia Pareskevi”
(Level of difficulty: Easy)
Circular walk Agia Pareskevi – Kremasti Bridge – Agia Pareskevi
Total Distance of the hike: 12 km,
Duration including stops: 7-8 hours

Kremasti Bridge, LesvosThe trip: We start our hike in Agia Pareskevi and leave the village on old kalderimi (pilgrim- or donkey paths). We cross Tsiknias River and reach the temple area of Klopedi. The fenced archeological excavation could be visited, if you wish. Nevertheless, most of the excavation can be easily seen from outside the fence. We continue the amazing monastery of Metochi Taxiarchis. The remaining monk, Father Ignatius, is normally there and very happy to show visitors the tiny monastery and his enchanted flower and vegetable garden. If we are lucky, he will sing just for us in his church.

We continue our hike on dirt roads and narrow paths up and down and cross Tsiknias River once again, this time by using old step stones. We walk through old olive groves – in spring they are completely covered in flowers – and reach the famous bridge of Kremasti. This bridge has been built in the 15th Century and is one of the most impressing historical constructions on Lesvos.

Small paths and kalderimi lead us back to the village of Agia Pareskevi. The place is well known for its lamb specialties, which we may want to try in the local kafeneon, where we sit down for a late lunch.

Feeling stronger after the meal we should not miss the chance to visit the olive oil museum in the village. In the amazing environment of an old olive press building we can learn about the traditional making of the olive oil. In the café at the museum we enjoy a coffee or ouzo and finish our day.

As there are not tavernas or shops available during our hike, please bring enough water.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation on arrangement.

Day trip “ Valley of the Mills “
(Level of difficulty: Easy)
Circular walk Petra – Petri – Valley of the Mills - Petra
Total Distance of the hike: 10 km, Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

Petra, LesvosThe trip: We start our hike in Petra, in the north of the island. A small asphalt road leads us up to the little village of Petri, which is a lovely mountain village with narrow streets and old traditional stone houses. We rest a bit from the ascent - maybe have a refreshment - and enjoy the beautiful view over the plain and down to the bay of Petra.

After the break we continue to the Valley of the Mills. In a washed out creek bed we find volcanic basalt columns and stair-like ruins. These are witnesses of a long gone era when, there were 12 water mills in total. In the lower parts of the valley we find a cluster of three mills. It is probable they were built for a settlement during the medieval or early Ottoman period. Countless butterflies accompany us on our way. The scent of the Mediterranean herbs is breathtaking. Along the stream bed, we now follow an ancient cobbled path and walk back to Petra.

Here we enjoy a light lunch in one of our favourite tavernas at the bottom of the rock. The striking rock and the church of the Glykfylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) perched on top, is the town’s landmark, which also gave the village its name (Greek petra = stone). Climbing up the old steps to the church is highly recommended: not only the church itself and its surroundings are worth seeing, but you also have fantastic views over the village, the sea and the coastline.  After our lunch we have the opportunity to visit the beautifully restored mansion “Spiti Vareltzidaina”. A stroll through the beautiful old streets down to the Platia for a coffee or ouzo with sea view completes our day.

Minimum of 2 people required, start time, meeting point or pick-up from your accommodation upon arrangement.

We ascend on cobblestone streets, leave the village behind and reach a track with stunning panoramic views over the bay of Petra and the small islands just off the coast. Day trip “Mount Lepetymnos”
(Level of difficulty: Medium)
Circular walk Lepetymnos – Peak – Argennos - Lepetymnos
Total Distance of the hike: 13 km, Duration including stops: 6-7 hours

The trip: We start our hike on top of the mountain in the village of Lepetymnos (334m above sea level). The steepest part of our hike starts now until we reach the peak of Mount Lepetymnos (968m above sea level). A stunning 360 degree panorama view rewards us for all the strain.

After an extended break we continue our hike and reach the second peak of the mountain massif (Mount Lepetymnos has two peaks).
